Library Loot: 4 January 2010

I had a quick trip to the library today and I didn’t get to spend much time there because I was meeting a friend for coffee and then Sam and I had to go get our marriage license (whoot!).  My goal is to visit the public library every Monday (excepting holidays).  I was good and limited myself to three books.

The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr — Isn’t it crazy that I love Victorian fiction (especially mysteries and crime) and haven’t read any Caleb Carr?  I didn’t think I could add another chunkster on the TBR pile, so I picked up this novel featuring Sherlock Holmes.

Mad Mary Lamb:  Lunacy and Murder in Literary London by Susan Tyler Hitchcock — I remember reading about this book somewhere.  Mary Lamb sounds fascinating.  The sister of essayist Charles Lamb, Mary murdered her mother and spent the remainder of her life writing with her brother and in madhouses.

The Color Out of Space:  Tales of Cosmic Horror by Lovecraft, Blackwood, Machen, Poe, and Other Masters of the Weird  edited by D. Thin — I grabbed this collection because a).  it is a NYRB, b). the cover is freaky, and c).  I love all manner of weird tales.

The little owls Sam bought for me at a thrift store today.  Can you say wedding cupcake topper?!

  1. Awesome!

I haven't made it to the library yet this year because I'm still trying to get through my Christmas reading pile. Three books down, three to go. Though I have to say, I'm really savoring the book of short stories and poems by Neil Gaiman that my husband gave me.

  2. Mad Mary Lamb sounds fascinating, you should check out Peter Ackroyd's novel The Lambs of London, about a Shakespear forgery and the infamous murder. Happy reading and happy new year.
